spring 2009 . modulating light

How can light, shadow and color shape our perception of space? How can we manipulate them through lenses, screens and reflective surfaces? I'm interested in how changing daylight can increase our awareness of nature and I've enjoyed guiding students in these digital and physical experiments.

The Beauty of Shadows

Workshop Description

Assignment Handout

sim: Wiesbaden workshop

How can light and shadow activate spaces? These ephemeral elements can transform the mood of a space, focus attention and engage viewers. Physical experiments with light and materials and a scavenger hunt for shadow conditions are complemented with digital studies in the examples below.

Screens & Shadows

Free experiments with lasercut paper, board and acrylic lead up to the AAA Voices installation that attracted visitors to manipulate light, shadow and translucent components. Visitors were invited to leave their opinions through either a graffiti wall or through a computer interface.
